US Independence Day shooting leaves eight injured, including four children, in Brooklyn
A family gathering in Brooklyn turned into a scene of chaos on Saturday night after a gunman opened fire during a backyard barbecue, leaving eight people injured, including four children. Authorities are investigating the attack, which occurred during the Independence Day holiday weekend and has renewed concerns over gun violence in New York City.
According to police, the shooting unfolded shortly before 10:35 p.m. local time when an unidentified suspect, reportedly dressed in black and wearing a face covering, approached the residence and fired multiple rounds into the backyard before fleeing the area.
Children among the victims
Emergency responders found eight victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Those injured include four boys aged 6, 7, 12 and 14, two women aged 21 and 25, and two men aged 33 and 37.
The most seriously injured victim is a 21-year-old woman who was shot in the chest and remains in critical condition. A 33-year-old man also sustained a chest wound. The youngest victim, a six-year-old boy, suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen, while the three older boys were struck in their legs or thighs. Police said the remaining victims are expected to survive.
Investigation focuses on possible gang-related motive
Investigators have not identified a clear motive for the shooting and said there was no evidence of an argument or confrontation immediately before the attack.
However, detectives are examining whether the incident could be connected to recent gang-related violence in the neighborhood. A fatal shooting linked to gang activity occurred nearby only days earlier, prompting authorities to explore possible connections between the two cases.
Crime scene investigators recovered a TEC-9-style firearm magazine and multiple spent shell casings from the location. No arrests have been announced, and the suspect remains at large.
City leaders condemn attack
New York City officials strongly denounced the shooting, emphasizing that acts of gun violence have no place in local communities, particularly during holiday celebrations intended to bring families together.
The attack cast a shadow over Fourth of July festivities and underscored the continuing challenge law enforcement faces in preventing firearm-related crimes despite ongoing public safety initiatives.
Police continue to appeal for witnesses and are reviewing surveillance footage from the surrounding area as the investigation remains active.
