US engages in unprecedented talks with Hamas for hostage release and Gaza ceasefire
The Trump administration is reportedly in direct negotiations with Hamas to facilitate the release of American hostages in Gaza and explore a broader agreement aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in the region, according to Axios.
During a news briefing, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the ongoing discussions, stating, “The special envoy who’s engaged in those negotiations does have the authority to talk to anyone.” She emphasized the seriousness of the situation, noting that "American lives are at stake" and declined to provide further details.
In a related statement, the Israeli Prime Minister’s cabinet acknowledged that they had been consulted on these direct talks with Hamas. "In consultation with the United States, Israel expressed its opinion on direct talks with Hamas," the statement read.
Sources indicated that while the US consulted Israel regarding the engagement with Hamas, some details of the discussions were communicated through unofficial channels. This development is particularly significant as it marks the first time the US has engaged directly with Hamas, a group it has classified as a terrorist organization since 1997. The talks have been led by Adam Boehler, the US presidential envoy for hostage affairs, in Doha over recent weeks.
Currently, 59 hostages are reported to be held in Gaza, following the return of approximately 30 individuals to Israel during a previous prisoner exchange. Among the hostages are five Americans, including 21-year-old Edan Alexander, who is believed to still be alive.
This shift in US policy represents a departure from the approach taken by the Biden administration regarding the conflict in Gaza.
