US and South Korea discuss cooperation on nuclear-powered submarines
The United States and South Korea have held discussions on potential cooperation in the development of nuclear-powered submarines, highlighting a growing focus on strengthening their military alliance and regional deterrence.
South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun stated that acquiring nuclear-powered submarines would enhance Seoul’s defense capabilities and contribute to the effectiveness of the alliance with Washington. His remarks were made during talks with US Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby, who is visiting Seoul as part of consultations on regional security.
US officials welcomed South Korea’s commitment to reinforcing its own military capabilities, describing the country as a key and reliable ally in maintaining stability on the Korean Peninsula. The discussions emphasized the importance of translating strategic agreements into concrete actions through continued working-level cooperation.
The talks follow the release of a new US National Defense Strategy, which places increased responsibility on South Korea to take a leading role in deterring threats from North Korea, with continued but more targeted US support.
Recent bilateral agreements, including cooperation in shipbuilding, advanced technologies and the nuclear sector, have further reinforced defense ties between the two countries. Both sides view submarine cooperation as a long-term project aligned with their shared security objectives.
