US ambassador cuts ties with Polish parliament leader over Trump criticism
The US ambassador to Poland has severed all contact with the Polish parliament president, accusing him of insulting President Donald Trump after he criticized the president's policies and refused to back his Nobel Peace Prize nomination.
Ambassador Tom Rose announced on X that there would be "no further contact, relationship, or communication" with Włodzimierz Czarzasty, effective immediately. "Czarzasty's outrageous and unprovoked insults against President Trump make him a serious obstacle to our excellent relations with Prime Minister Tusk and his government," Rose wrote.
The diplomatic break stems from Czarzasty's Monday rejection of a joint US-Israeli proposal to rally global parliamentary leaders for Trump's 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. The initiative, launched in October 2025 by US House Speaker Mike Johnson and Israeli Knesset President Amir Ohana, cited Trump's Middle East peace efforts. "President Trump, in my view, destabilizes these organizations, represents a policy of strength, and pursues transactional politics through force," Czarzasty, leader of The Left party and a junior coalition partner, told reporters. "This is why I will not support Trump's Nobel nomination; he does not deserve it." After Rose's response, Czarzasty told Onet he would stand firm and posted on X that he "systematically respects the United States as Poland's key partner."
Prime Minister Donald Tusk replied directly to Rose on X: "Mr. Ambassador Rose, allies should respect each other, not lecture one another. That is at least how we in Poland view partnership." The exchange highlights the tightrope walked by Poland's pro-European government coalition managing ties with Washington amid Trump's "America First" policies many find alarming. Poland remains NATO's most committed member, boasting some of the alliance's highest defense spending.
The incident has widened rifts within Poland's political class. President Karol Nawrocki, a Trump ally and conservative, announced via spokesperson that Czarzasty may have "social and business ties" to Russia, a claim set for debate at a National Security Council meeting on February 11. Czarzasty denied wrongdoing, saying he had "nothing to reproach himself for." Nawrocki's spokesperson called the situation a result of the ruling coalition choosing a parliament president "who does not understand the importance and scope of alliances."
