The British Embassy in Spain has issued an urgent appeal for British residents in the provinces of Málaga and Alicante to exchange their green certificates for TIE cards, following new regulations that could significantly affect their travel rights. This request is particularly pressing given that a substantial number of UK nationals reside in these areas, where green certificate ownership is notably high.

Recent data from the Spanish Ministry for Inclusion, Social Security and Migrations highlights that many Britons in these provinces continue to hold onto their outdated residency documents. With the implementation of the EU's Entry Exit System set for October, those with green certificates may encounter serious issues when attempting to travel. Under this new system, all non-EU travelers must register their personal information and biometric data unless they possess a valid biometric residency card.

For British nationals living in Spain, only the TIE will be recognized by Spanish and EU authorities. The green certificate fails to meet the necessary criteria outlined in Annex 22 of the Schengen Borders Code. Consequently, holders of green certificates may find their residency rights unacknowledged, leading to potential accusations of overstaying their tourist status. This situation could result in denied entry, forcing individuals to return to the UK for resolution, which may involve a lengthy appeals process.

With hundreds of thousands of Britons traversing through Alicante and Málaga airports each year, it is critical for anyone with a green certificate to convert it to a TIE without delay. Many residents have already made this transition, underscoring the importance of compliance.

His Majesty’s Ambassador Sir Alex Ellis remarked on the positive progress made since the campaign's inception, noting an uptick in TIE applications. He expressed gratitude to various community organizations and individuals who have aided in disseminating this vital information.

Despite the successes, a minority of British residents still possess green certificates. The Embassy aims to reach this group to elucidate the importance of obtaining a TIE before the upcoming deadline in October, ensuring seamless travel into Spain and the broader Schengen area.

The British Embassy has intensified its outreach efforts in Málaga and Alicante since May of last year. Collaborations with charities and British organizations, including Age Concern and the Royal British Legion, have been instrumental in spreading awareness about the upcoming changes. Additionally, the Embassy is working closely with local authorities and media outlets to ensure that information regarding the TIE and the Entry Exit System is widely available.

Through these initiatives, the British Embassy is committed to assisting residents in navigating this transition and safeguarding their travel rights as the deadline approaches.
