United States nuclear submarines to be deployed in Australia this year
The United States is set to deploy several nuclear-powered submarines in Australia this year as part of a growing defense cooperation under the AUKUS security pact, involving Australia, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
According to Australian defense officials, multiple U.S. attack submarines will rotate operations from a strategic naval base on Australia’s west coast, near Perth, starting next year. This move is designed to strengthen allied naval presence in the Indo-Pacific region amid rising geopolitical tensions.
American military sources indicate that positioning submarines closer to key maritime routes, including the South China Sea, will enhance operational reach and response capabilities. The area remains highly sensitive due to ongoing strategic competition involving China and regional security concerns linked to Taiwan.
The AUKUS agreement also includes long-term plans for Australia to acquire U.S. second-hand submarines from the 2030s and jointly develop a new generation of nuclear-powered submarines with the United Kingdom. The program is considered one of the most ambitious defense projects in Australian history and could cost up to $235 billion over three decades.
Defense analysts say the initiative reflects a broader shift in Western naval strategy, focusing on deterrence and increased military interoperability among allied nations.
