United States launches investigation into Germany over pharmaceutical pricing practices

The United States government has opened an official investigation into Germany’s pharmaceutical pricing policies, in a move that could potentially lead to the imposition of new tariffs on medical products.

The inquiry, announced by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), will examine whether Germany’s pricing system for innovative medicines is “unreasonable or discriminatory” and whether it places an unfair burden on U.S. pharmaceutical companies engaged in research and development.

According to the USTR, the investigation aims to ensure that American consumers and companies are not disproportionately covering global pharmaceutical innovation costs. Officials also stated that the probe follows several months of discussions with German counterparts aimed at resolving the issue diplomatically.

If the findings conclude that Germany’s pricing practices restrict fair trade, the United States could introduce retaliatory measures, including targeted tariffs on pharmaceutical exports.

U.S. Health Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. said Washington expects trading partners to “pay their fair share” for advanced medical treatments used by their populations, reinforcing the administration’s tougher stance on international drug pricing.

The move reflects a broader U.S. strategy of pressuring foreign governments to adjust healthcare pricing systems while encouraging pharmaceutical production and investment within the United States. Previous trade agreements, including a deal with the United Kingdom, have also included commitments related to drug pricing in exchange for reduced tariffs.

The investigation adds a new layer of tension to transatlantic trade relations at a time when healthcare costs and industrial policy are becoming increasingly central to global economic negotiations.
