United States authorizes Venezuela to pay Nicolás Maduro’s legal fees
The United States government has authorized Venezuela to cover the legal defense costs of former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro, according to recent judicial documents.
Maduro, who is currently detained in the United States, faces several serious charges, including narcoterrorism and conspiracy related to alleged drug trafficking activities. He was arrested during a U.S. military operation in Caracas alongside his wife, Cilia Flores.
Previously, U.S. sanctions prevented the Venezuelan government from funding Maduro’s legal representation. However, this restriction has now been adjusted, allowing Caracas to contribute to his defense expenses.
The decision comes after arguments from Maduro’s legal team, which claimed that blocking access to government funds violated his constitutional right to legal counsel. His lawyers also emphasized that he could not properly finance his defense without state support.
The case continues to attract international attention, highlighting tensions between Washington and Caracas as legal proceedings move forward in a New York federal court.
