United States and Morocco Lead UN Resolution for Ethical AI Development
In an unprecedented move, the United States and Morocco have introduced a groundbreaking United Nations resolution aimed at harnessing the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) for the betterment of humanity. Entitled "Seizing the Opportunities Offered by Safe, Secure, and Reliable Artificial Intelligence Systems for Sustainable Development," this resolution represents a global consensus on the urgent necessity for responsible and inclusive AI advancement.
Presented during a press conference at the UN headquarters in New York, ambassadors from both nations unveiled this pioneering initiative, urging UN member states to prioritize the development of secure and reliable AI systems to address critical global challenges such as poverty, healthcare, food security, climate change, and education.
Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US representative to the UN, highlighted the vast potential of AI to reshape economies and societies worldwide. However, she stressed the importance of ensuring equitable access to its benefits, advocating for progress across all nations.
The resolution envisions a future centered around human values, emphasizing ethics, inclusivity, privacy protection, and alignment with sustainable development goals and human rights. It aims to catalyze progress where AI becomes a force for positive change, ensuring no nation or community is left behind.
Ambassador Omar Hilale, Morocco's permanent representative to the UN, commended the US for spearheading the resolution and emphasized Morocco's early engagement in facilitating its adoption. He stressed the necessity of dialogue among UN member states to ensure that this rapidly evolving technology serves the common good.
Hilale further emphasized Morocco's efforts to ensure that the resolution addresses the potential for AI to widen existing social, digital, and economic disparities between developed and developing countries. This includes extending the benefits of AI to all UN members, thereby fostering sustainable development.
In a collective statement, 54 states, including Morocco, emphasized the resolution's potential to extend AI benefits to all UN members, thereby promoting sustainable development. The statement reiterated fundamental principles for responsible AI development and called for increased collaboration with stakeholders from various sectors, including the private sector, academia, and civil society.
Highlighting the significant potential of AI for African nations, particularly in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, education, environmental initiatives, and economic growth, Hilale concluded by reaffirming Morocco's unwavering support for international cooperation on AI development, ensuring it serves the betterment of humanity.
With the adoption of this landmark resolution, the United Nations has taken a crucial stride toward shaping a future where AI acts as a catalyst for global progress, ensuring that no nation or community is left behind in the pursuit of sustainable development and a more equitable world.
