The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, strongly condemned the assassination attempt against Colombian presidential hopeful and senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, which occurred on Saturday in Bogotá.

The UN spokesperson issued a statement saying, “The Secretary-General firmly denounces the attack carried out on June 7 against Miguel Uribe Turbay.” He emphasized that such a violent political act requires a thorough investigation and that those responsible must face justice.

Miguel Uribe Turbay, affiliated with the right-wing Democratic Center party, was targeted in an assassination attempt by a 15-year-old assailant who fired three shots during a public event. The senator, aged 39, was critically wounded after two bullets struck his head, and his condition was reported as very serious by Colombian health officials.

Several countries, including the United States, have condemned the attack. The U.S. criticized the incident as a consequence of violent left-wing rhetoric coming from the highest levels of the Colombian government.
