UN estimates over 6.7 million affected by devastating Venezuela earthquake

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a United Nations agency, has reported that the powerful earthquake that struck Venezuela on June 24 may have affected approximately 6.76 million people, highlighting the scale of the humanitarian emergency unfolding in the country.

According to the organization’s preliminary assessment, the disaster’s impact could be especially severe in the capital, Caracas, where up to two million residents are expected to be affected by the destruction and disruption caused by the quake.

The earthquake, which reached a magnitude of 7.5 on the Richter scale, caused widespread damage across northern and northwestern regions of Venezuela. Authorities have reported significant destruction to infrastructure, including hospitals, transport systems, and residential buildings, with Caracas airport also temporarily shut down following the disaster.

Official government figures indicate that the death toll has risen to 1,430 people, while more than 3,200 others have been injured. Rescue operations and humanitarian response efforts are continuing as teams work to assess the full extent of the damage and assist displaced populations.

The IOM emphasized that the scale of the crisis reflects both the intensity of the earthquake and the vulnerability of affected urban areas. Emergency agencies warn that recovery efforts will require extensive international support, particularly for housing, medical care, and infrastructure rehabilitation.

As Venezuela continues to grapple with the aftermath of one of its most destructive natural disasters in recent history, humanitarian organizations stress the urgent need for coordinated global assistance to support millions of affected residents.
