Un calls for maximum restraint between Israel and Hezbollah amid renewed cross-border clashes
The United Nations has expressed deep concern over renewed hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, urging both sides to exercise “maximum restraint” as cross-border exchanges intensify along the frontier separating Israel and Lebanon.
According to UN officials, the recent escalation follows rocket fire launched from southern Lebanon toward northern Israel, which was attributed to Hezbollah. In response, Israeli forces carried out airstrikes targeting areas in Lebanon. The violence has resulted in casualties and injuries on both sides, raising fears of a broader confrontation.
Speaking to reporters, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric highlighted the organization’s alarm over the exchanges of fire across the Blue Line, the UN-demarcated boundary between Lebanon and Israel established after Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000.
“We are very concerned about the exchanges of fire across the Blue Line,” Dujarric said, noting that the situation is evolving rapidly. He confirmed that the UN is aware of strikes claimed by Hezbollah against Israel, as well as Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon that have reportedly caused dozens of casualties, according to Lebanese health authorities.
The UN reiterated its call for all parties to respect the existing ceasefire arrangements and to avoid actions that could further destabilize the region. Officials warned that continued escalation could undermine fragile security conditions along the border and increase the risk of a wider regional conflict.
Tensions between Israel and Lebanon have periodically flared in recent years, often linked to broader geopolitical rivalries and internal political dynamics. The United Nations has maintained a peacekeeping presence in southern Lebanon through United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), tasked with monitoring the cessation of hostilities and supporting stability along the border.
Diplomatic efforts are ongoing to prevent further deterioration. UN officials emphasized that dialogue and adherence to international agreements remain essential to preserving regional stability and protecting civilian lives.
