In a stark escalation of the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, a United Nations convoy en route to Gaza City came under fire on Sunday, despite prior coordination with Israeli authorities. Philippe Lazzarini, the head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), reported the incident, which has since sparked international concern and condemnation.

According to Lazzarini's account on social media platform X, one of the convoy's vehicles sustained significant damage after being hit by at least five bullets. The attack occurred while the convoy was waiting near an Israeli checkpoint south of Wadi Gaza. The targeted vehicle was forced to abandon the mission, leaving the rest of the clearly marked UN convoy to seek shelter during the assault.

"Humanitarian aid workers are not a target," Lazzarini emphasized, calling for those responsible to be held accountable. The convoy, comprised of armored vehicles and staff wearing distinctive UN vests, had received prior approval from Israeli authorities for their mission.

The incident has drawn sharp criticism from international figures, including Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, who denounced the attack in strong terms. Safadi demanded protection for UNRWA and other humanitarian teams operating in the region, highlighting the broader implications of such actions on international law and order.

Compounding the crisis, Israeli forces have reportedly issued an evacuation order affecting over 400,000 Palestinians in eastern Khan Younis. Local sources indicate that residents were given minimal time to flee before military operations commenced, following the distribution of evacuation leaflets.

The situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, with Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis issuing an urgent appeal for blood donations due to critical shortages. The Palestinian health ministry has warned of the severe threat this poses to the lives of the sick and injured, amid what they describe as ongoing attacks against civilians.

As tensions mount and humanitarian concerns deepen, the international community faces increasing pressure to address the escalating crisis in the Gaza Strip. The attack on a UN convoy marks a significant breach of humanitarian protocols and underscores the precarious situation faced by aid workers in conflict zones.

This unfolding story continues to draw global attention, raising questions about the protection of civilian populations and the challenges of delivering aid in areas of active conflict. As diplomatic efforts intensify, the world watches closely, hoping for a resolution that can bring an end to the suffering and pave the way for lasting peace in the region.
