UN Adopts Historic Morocco-US AI Resolution to Promote Safe and Trustworthy Systems
In a groundbreaking move, the United Nations General Assembly has adopted a historic resolution spearheaded by Morocco and the United States, aimed at promoting safe, secure, and reliable artificial intelligence (AI) systems worldwide. The resolution, which garnered the support of over 120 UN member countries, represents a significant step toward establishing clear international norms for AI and fostering trustworthy AI systems.
Vice President Kamala Harris, lauding the resolution as a "historic step," emphasized the shared responsibility to ensure that AI can be harnessed for sustainable development while managing its risks. "The resolution establishes a path forward on AI where every country can both seize the promise and manage the risks of AI," she stated in a White House readout.
The resolution seeks to bridge the artificial intelligence and other digital gaps that exist between and within nations, recognizing the potential of AI systems to accelerate progress towards achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. It underscores the importance of protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms as central to the development and use of AI systems.
In her statement, Harris stressed the need for worldwide benefit from AI resources and expertise, highlighting the necessity for all countries to prioritize the safety, privacy, and human rights of their citizens. "The resolution makes clear that protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms must be central to the development and use of AI systems," she concluded.
The UN General Assembly acknowledged the resolution's significance, noting that it represents "the first time the Assembly has adopted a resolution on regulating the emerging field." The adoption of this resolution marks a historic milestone in the global effort to harness the immense potential of AI while mitigating its risks and ensuring ethical and responsible development and deployment of these cutting-edge technologies.
