Ukraine expands long range interceptor drone control across vast distances

Ukraine has announced a major advance in drone warfare, stating it can now remotely control interceptor drones over hundreds and even thousands of kilometers. Defense officials described the system as a new form of “light air defense,” enabling operators to guide drones from secure locations far from the battlefield.

According to Mykhailo Fedorov, operators are no longer tied to fixed frontline positions. Pilots can control drones from cities such as Kyiv or Lviv, or even from outside the country. More than ten defense manufacturers have already integrated this remote control capability, which aims to improve interception rates while reducing risks to personnel and expanding operational flexibility.

The announcement follows rapid progress in extending operational range. Earlier demonstrations showed interception at around 34 kilometers, followed by a reported engagement at 500 kilometers where two Russian drones were neutralized remotely. More recently, footage showed an interceptor drone controlled from abroad while operating over northern Ukraine at a distance of roughly 2,000 kilometers. The system relies on relay architecture that transmits video and control signals through ground stations and network links to maintain stable connections across long distances.

Ukraine has also expanded drone interception capabilities to maritime environments. Military units reported the destruction of a Russian loitering munition using an interceptor launched from an unmanned surface vessel. This marks the first documented case of an aerial interception conducted from a naval drone platform, extending defensive coverage along coastal routes frequently used by incoming threats.

Officials say these developments form part of a broader strategy to counter the growing use of drones in the conflict with Russia. Ukrainian interceptor drones reportedly destroyed 33,000 Russian UAVs in March alone. Authorities have set targets of achieving full detection and neutralizing at least 95 percent of hostile aerial assets, signaling an effort to build near total coverage against drone attacks.
