UK urges Israel to reconsider Gaza control plan amid humanitarian crisis

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer urged Israel on Friday to reverse its plan to take control of Gaza City, calling the move "wrong" and warning it would exacerbate the ongoing conflict.

“This action will do nothing to end this conflict or secure the release of the hostages,” Starmer said, emphasizing that the decision would only lead to more bloodshed.

The remarks came after Israel’s military announced its intention to assume control of Gaza City, following a proposal by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that received approval from the security cabinet.

Starmer’s government has intensified its criticism of Israel’s military operations in Gaza, citing an escalating humanitarian crisis. He reiterated the UK’s call for an immediate ceasefire, increased humanitarian aid, and the release of hostages held by Hamas.

“Every day, the crisis in Gaza worsens, with civilians enduring appalling conditions,” Starmer said. “What we need is a ceasefire, humanitarian aid, and a negotiated solution.”

The UK has also signaled its intent to recognize a Palestinian state in September unless Israel takes meaningful steps toward peace, including ceasing its offensive in Gaza.

Starmer underscored the importance of a two-state solution and urged both sides to engage in good-faith negotiations. “Our message is clear: a diplomatic solution is possible, but both parties must step away from the path of destruction,” he concluded.
