UK court jails seven men for up to 35 years in child exploitation gang case
A British court has sentenced seven men to prison terms ranging from 12 to 35 years for their role in the sexual abuse of two young girls over a five-year period. The case is part of the broader scandal of so-called "grooming gangs" that has shaken the United Kingdom for decades.
Judge Jonathan Seely of the Manchester court described the victims as "extremely vulnerable," saying they were "passed from man to man for sexual purposes, mistreated, humiliated, and degraded." The ringleader, Mohammed Zahid, received the heaviest sentence of 35 years in prison.
Over several decades, similar cases have been uncovered in multiple English cities, often involving groups of men of mostly Pakistani origin targeting young girls, many of them white and from disadvantaged backgrounds. Authorities estimate thousands of victims, and more than a hundred perpetrators have already been convicted.
The scandal has also sparked criticism of police forces and social services, accused of failing to protect the victims despite repeated warning signs.
