UK–Morocco partnership key to new British foreign policy
In an op-ed published on Politics.co.uk, British MP Fabian Hamilton, a Labour Party member and co-chair of the UK–Morocco Parliamentary Group, emphasized the growing strategic significance of the United Kingdom’s partnership with Morocco. He highlighted that this relationship is no longer merely symbolic or diplomatic—it has evolved into a central pillar of the UK's modern foreign policy.
Hamilton described Morocco as a reliable security ally, especially given increasing regional threats. He pointed to Rabat’s crucial role in countering challenges such as Russian expansion in the Sahel, terrorism, and human trafficking.
The bilateral relationship has matured beyond traditional diplomacy, now directly benefiting British citizens. Hamilton referred to the recent visit by Foreign Secretary David Lammy to Morocco as a turning point, revitalizing bilateral cooperation.
He praised the renewed momentum in UK–Morocco economic and trade relations, which had stagnated under previous UK leadership. This fresh dynamic has created substantial opportunities for businesses in both nations. Hamilton noted that UK Export Finance has pledged an additional £5 billion to support new projects in Morocco—particularly in infrastructure—positioning British firms at the forefront of building essential facilities for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Furthermore, Hamilton underscored the significant opportunities for UK pharmaceutical companies, spurred by Morocco's ongoing healthcare reforms. The transformation of Morocco’s healthcare system—estimated at around £2 billion—is expected to boost cooperation in pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, and health technologies.
Addressing the Moroccan Sahara issue, Hamilton affirmed that the UK’s support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative is grounded in a practical and realistic perspective. He noted that the decision aligns with the stance of major allies like France, the United States, and Spain. This support, he added, follows careful evaluation and aims to contribute to a durable resolution that respects local populations and enhances regional stability.
