UAE Engages in Talks on Post-War Gaza Governance

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is exploring a potential role in overseeing Gaza's governance, security, and reconstruction following the conflict, in coordination with Israel and the United States. Discussions have centered on establishing an interim administration until a reformed Palestinian Authority (PA) can assume control, according to sources familiar with the talks.

The UAE, a key security ally of the U.S. with diplomatic ties to Israel, has positioned itself as a mediator advocating for a revitalized PA to govern Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem as part of a sovereign Palestinian state. However, Israel opposes this proposal. Emirati officials have emphasized the necessity of significant PA reforms and a credible roadmap toward Palestinian statehood as prerequisites for any future plans. "The UAE will not support any initiative that lacks these critical elements," an Emirati official stated.

The PA, established under the Oslo Accords, retains limited governance over the West Bank but has been absent from Gaza since Hamas seized control in 2007. Rebuilding Gaza's infrastructure and institutions is anticipated to take years and require substantial international funding. The UAE has also proposed deploying private contractors for post-war peacekeeping, though this has raised concerns due to historical controversies involving such entities.

While the UAE has criticized Israel's military actions, the Gulf state remains aligned against Hamas and supports broader regional stability efforts. The international community continues to deliberate on viable strategies for Gaza's future, emphasizing the need for cooperation among key stakeholders.
