U.S. envoy urges de-escalation and dialogue after Syria-Druze clashes and Israeli strikes

The U.S. Special Envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, has called on all parties involved in the ongoing violence in southern Syria to immediately de-escalate and engage in meaningful dialogue aimed at achieving a lasting ceasefire.

His appeal comes in the wake of violent clashes in Suwayda, a majority-Druze city in southern Syria, and recent Israeli airstrikes on military targets in Damascus. The escalation has raised alarm over regional stability and the safety of the Druze minority—a community with religious roots in Islam, also present in Israel.

“We unequivocally condemn the violence against civilians in Suwayda. All parties must step back and commit to a constructive dialogue that leads to a durable ceasefire,” Barrack posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Tensions flared after Israel issued a strong warning to Syrian authorities against any military action targeting Druze populations. In response to perceived threats, the Israeli military reportedly launched precision strikes on Syrian army headquarters in Damascus.

The situation underscores the fragility of Syria’s internal dynamics, where ethnic and religious minorities continue to be caught in the crossfire of broader geopolitical rivalries. The United States' call for restraint signals a renewed push for diplomacy amid a volatile regional climate.
