U.S. cargo plane crash in Kentucky kills 13, rescue teams still searching for missing

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky — The death toll from the crash of a UPS cargo plane in Louisville has risen to 13, local authorities confirmed late Thursday, as emergency teams continue to search for missing individuals.

The McDonnell Douglas MD-11 aircraft, operated by the American logistics company UPS, went down on Tuesday afternoon shortly after takeoff from Muhammad Ali International Airport. Witnesses said one of its engines detached mid-air, causing the plane to spiral and crash about five kilometers from the runway.

Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg announced the updated toll on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “I have learned that a thirteenth person has died following the crash of UPS Flight 2976. My thoughts are with the families, friends, and colleagues of all the victims. We will overcome this tragedy together.”

According to UPS, three crew members were on board. The other victims were people located in the area where the plane crashed, which destroyed several buildings and triggered a massive fire.

Authorities said several individuals remain missing, while investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have begun analyzing flight data to determine the cause of the engine failure.
