Two National Guard members killed near White House in suspected terror attack
Two members of the West Virginia National Guard were fatally shot near the White House on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, in what President Donald Trump has condemned as an "act of terror." The guardsmen were conducting a patrol near Farragut Square in downtown Washington, D.C., when the attack occurred. Both men succumbed to their injuries, as confirmed by West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey.
The suspect, identified as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who arrived in the United States in 2021, was subdued by fellow Guardsmen and later arrested by law enforcement. Lakanwal was reportedly shot during the altercation but survived and is now in custody.
President Trump, who was in Florida celebrating Thanksgiving at the time, called the attack an "act of evil" and pledged severe consequences for the suspect. He criticized immigration policies under the Biden administration, which he claimed enabled Lakanwal's entry into the country. Trump also expressed his support for the National Guard, the military, and law enforcement in the wake of the tragedy.
The shooting prompted an immediate and intense response from law enforcement. Washington Metropolitan Police and National Guard officers quickly secured the area, and residents were urged to avoid the vicinity as investigations continue. The National Guard has maintained a heightened presence in the capital since last summer as part of President Trump’s broader crime-fighting initiatives.
The incident, occurring in a highly secured area near the White House, underscores ongoing concerns about safety and security in the nation’s capital. Investigations are ongoing, and officials are working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attack.
