Two arrested in Istanbul for alleged spying on behalf of Israel
Turkish authorities have arrested two individuals in Istanbul on suspicion of spying for Israeli intelligence, according to state-run media reports on Friday. The case reportedly involves activities spanning more than a decade.
The suspects, including a Turkish businessman and an accomplice of Palestinian origin, are alleged to have been recruited by the Mossad to gather intelligence on Palestinians considered hostile to Israel. Among the allegations is an attempt to approach a Hamas engineer in Tunisia under the pretense of selling drone parts provided by Israeli intelligence. The engineer, Mohamed Zouari, who specialized in drone development, was fatally shot in December 2016 in Sfax, Tunisia—a killing for which Hamas blamed Israel at the time.
State media also report that one of the two men had recently been involved in planning a “logistical operation” on behalf of the Mossad across multiple countries. Both suspects remain in custody as investigations continue, with authorities examining the full extent of their alleged espionage activities.
The arrests highlight ongoing concerns over foreign intelligence operations and security in Turkey, reflecting the sensitive nature of regional intelligence networks and the risks posed by international espionage activities.
