Turkish first lady urges melania Trump to support children in Gaza

The First Lady of Turkey, Emine Erdogan, has called on her U.S. counterpart Melania Trump to address a letter to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on behalf of the children of Gaza. Erdogan urged her to show the same compassion she recently expressed for Ukrainian children affected by the war.

The appeal comes shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, during which he handed him a “peace message” reportedly written by Melania Trump for Ukraine.

In a letter made public by the Turkish presidency, Emine Erdogan stressed that Gaza has been under siege for nearly two years in response to the Hamas-led attacks of October 7, 2023. She noted that 62,000 civilians, including 18,000 children, have died in Gaza in less than two years, citing figures from Hamas health authorities considered credible by the United Nations.

“I trust that the compassion you have shown toward the 648 Ukrainian children who lost their lives in the war can also extend to Gaza,” she wrote. Erdogan added that a call from Melania Trump “would carry historic responsibility in support of the Palestinian people.”

Her message comes as the United Nations officially declared a famine in Gaza on Friday, a claim dismissed as “a shameless lie” by Prime Minister Netanyahu.
