Turkey: CHP holds urgent congress to resist Erdogan’s influence

The Republican People’s Party (CHP), Turkey’s main opposition party, is convening an extraordinary congress in Ankara on Sunday, September 21, in a bid to safeguard its leadership amid mounting pressure from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s administration.

The 22nd extraordinary congress comes as the CHP faces a wide-ranging judicial probe. Authorities have accused the party of irregularities, including alleged vote-buying, during its last ordinary congress on November 4–5, 2023, when Ozgur Ozel was elected party leader. Legal proceedings could result in the dismissal of the CHP leadership.

In an administrative maneuver designed to protect the party, Ozel is the sole candidate for re-election. Around 1,000 delegates are expected to confirm him as party head, a step that the CHP hopes will prevent the appointment of a state administrator to lead the opposition party.

The move reflects the ongoing tension between Erdogan’s government and opposition forces, highlighting the challenges facing Turkey’s democratic institutions as the ruling party tightens its influence over political and judicial processes.
