Türkiye intensifies preparations for NATO summit in Ankara
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that Türkiye has stepped up preparations for the NATO summit scheduled to take place in Ankara on July 7–8. Speaking during a parliamentary meeting in the capital, Erdogan said the government aims to make the gathering “a reference point in NATO’s history.”
A major focus of his remarks was alliance cohesion, particularly following confirmation that U.S. President Donald Trump will attend the summit in person. Erdogan described Trump’s participation as “a valuable step” for NATO unity.
The president also linked Türkiye’s security posture to developments beyond its borders, saying that threats emerging in places such as Aleppo, Damascus, and Beirut directly affect Turkish national security. He warned against actions that could destabilize neighboring countries or create faits accomplis in the region.
On regional tensions, Erdogan criticized Israel’s military actions and urged the international community to intervene. He warned that unchecked escalation could have consequences far beyond the Middle East.
The Eastern Mediterranean was another key theme in his speech. Erdogan said Türkiye would respond “very clearly and very harshly” to any attempt to undermine Turkish or Turkish Cypriot rights in the region.
The upcoming summit is expected to bring together NATO leaders to discuss alliance strategy, defense cooperation, and regional security challenges at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions.
