In a recent speech at the Economic Club of New York, former President Donald Trump revealed a bold initiative for streamlining federal spending, vowing to adopt a government efficiency plan backed by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk. The plan, should Trump return to the White House, would be centered on the creation of a "government efficiency commission" tasked with auditing the federal government's financial and operational frameworks.

“If re-elected, I will establish a government efficiency commission to conduct a comprehensive financial audit and propose sweeping reforms,” Trump declared, adding that Musk has expressed interest in leading the commission, “if he has the time.” According to Trump, the commission’s primary mission will be to eliminate fraud and improper payments within a six-month window, projecting potential savings in the trillions.

The former president’s proposal was part of a broader seven-pillar economic plan, outlining strategies to cut federal regulations, raise tariffs, and make permanent the tax cuts he had signed into law in 2017. However, Trump did not provide details about the size or funding of the commission, leading to questions about the feasibility of his ambitious timeline, given that the federal government’s annual budget exceeds $6 trillion and its workforce numbers in the millions.

Despite the complexities, Trump’s idea resonates with his long-standing objective of reshaping the federal bureaucracy, particularly his desire to simplify the process of dismissing civil servants and trimming federal agencies.

The relationship between Trump and Musk has evolved from a rocky past to a reconciled alliance. While Musk had previously criticized Trump, calling him a "bullshit artist" on social media, the tech mogul has since offered support, particularly after an attempted assassination on Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The pair publicly reunited in August, when Musk hosted Trump on X Spaces, despite some technical difficulties during the live event.

In addition to the efficiency commission, Trump’s economic plan reiterates familiar themes from his presidency, including efforts to deregulate industries and boost American manufacturing through tariffs.
