Trump discusses Middle East peace with Syria’s al-Sharaa at the White House

US President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social that he looks forward to meeting again with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa following their first discussion at the White House. The meeting, held privately, marks a historic event as al-Sharaa becomes the first Syrian leader to visit the White House since Syria's independence in 1946.

Trump described the discussion as an honor, emphasizing al-Sharaa’s advocacy for peace in the Middle East. “We discussed all the intricacies of peace in the region, of which he is a major advocate. I look forward to meeting and speaking again,” Trump shared in his post.

The US president highlighted the importance of a stable and successful Syria for all neighboring countries, noting the region’s interconnected challenges. Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Trump praised al-Sharaa as a strong leader, saying, “He comes from a very tough place, and he’s a tough guy. People said he’s had a rough past, but we’ve all had rough pasts. If you didn’t, you wouldn’t have a chance.”

The meeting’s significance lies in its potential implications for regional diplomacy, as Syria has long been at the center of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. While details of the discussions remain private, the encounter underscores renewed efforts to address longstanding conflicts and foster stability in the region.
