Trump announces hospital ship deployment to Greenland
U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States is dispatching a hospital ship to Greenland, a self-governing Danish territory that has become increasingly central to geopolitical discussions over Arctic security.
In a message posted on his social media platform, Trump said a “large hospital ship” was on its way to provide medical assistance to residents who, according to him, lack sufficient access to healthcare services. He did not specify the scale of the mission, the timeline for deployment, or how many people could benefit from the operation.
The post was accompanied by an image appearing to show the USNS Mercy, a 272-meter hospital vessel typically stationed on the U.S. West Coast, sailing toward snow-covered mountains. Officials did not confirm whether that specific ship would be assigned to the mission.
According to the White House, the initiative is being coordinated with Jeff Landry, recently appointed as U.S. special envoy to Greenland. The move comes amid renewed debate in Washington over Greenland’s strategic importance, particularly in light of growing Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic.
Trump has repeatedly argued that Greenland’s geographic position and natural resources are critical to U.S. national security. However, his statements have drawn concern from several European capitals, especially in Denmark, which retains sovereignty over the territory.
The announcement follows the signing of a framework agreement with Mark Rutte, Secretary General of NATO, aimed at strengthening American influence in the region and facilitating dialogue between the United States, Denmark and Greenland.
Earlier the same day, Danish authorities reported that a crew member from a U.S. submarine operating near Nuuk had been medically evacuated to a local hospital after requiring urgent treatment, underscoring ongoing military activity in Arctic waters.
Greenland has long occupied a sensitive position in Arctic geopolitics, as melting ice and emerging shipping routes increase its global significance.
