Transport sector in Morocco surpasses pre-pandemic levels between 2022 and 2025

Morocco’s transport and logistics sector has shown remarkable progress over the past three years, with performance indicators from 2022 to 2025 exceeding those recorded before the Covid-19 crisis. According to Transport and Logistics Minister Abdessamad Kayouh, the industry has demonstrated renewed dynamism across all modes of transport, reflecting a strong recovery and an improved ability to meet the country’s mobility and supply-chain needs.

Speaking during a parliamentary committee session on the ministry’s sectoral budget, Kayouh highlighted that public transport systems have proven capable of absorbing increased demand during peak periods such as religious holidays, the summer season, and the annual Marhaba operation. This resilience, he noted, has ensured the continuous movement of people and goods throughout the country.

The minister also underlined the sector’s strategic role in maintaining the regular supply of essential commodities and in connecting domestic producers with international markets through both imports and exports. This, he said, has contributed significantly to national economic stability and the strengthening of Morocco’s competitiveness.

Rail transport has been one of the strongest performers, with improvements in network quality and service standards solidifying Morocco’s reputation as a continental and global leader. The national railway operator reported strong growth in passenger numbers and freight volumes, reflecting the sector’s sustained momentum.

Air transport also continued its upward trajectory, with Moroccan airports recording unprecedented traffic in 2024. The sharp rise in international arrivals helped reinforce Morocco’s position as an attractive destination for tourism and investment.

Maritime trade registered substantial expansion as well, with port traffic increasing markedly between 2021 and 2024. This growth illustrates the adaptability of Moroccan maritime logistics to evolving global trade demands.

Road transport has maintained consistent activity, supported by enhanced driver training programs and exceptional authorizations issued to manage high-demand periods. These measures contributed to improving service quality and ensuring smoother travel for citizens.

Kayouh concluded that financial indicators for public institutions and companies operating in the transport and logistics sector have also improved considerably since 2021, confirming the positive impact of ongoing reforms aimed at modernizing and strengthening the sector.
