Tragedy Strikes in Uttarakhand: Bus Plunges into Gorge, Claiming 36 Lives

A devastating accident occurred in the Marchula area of Almora district, Uttarakhand, where a bus carrying 42 passengers plunged into a deep gorge, resulting in the deaths of at least 36 individuals and leaving several others injured. The incident unfolded on Monday morning, as the bus was en route from Garhwal to Ramnagar when it lost control and skidded down a steep slope.

Uttarakhand's Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami confirmed the grim news, stating that immediate relief and rescue operations were underway. Vineet Pal, a senior official involved in the response efforts, reported that some of the injured were airlifted for advanced medical treatment. Eyewitness accounts and photographs from the scene depict the bus wreckage severely mangled amidst dense undergrowth, with its front end crushed nearly flat.

Rescue teams, including local police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), worked tirelessly to retrieve victims from the wreckage. Volunteers formed a human chain along the treacherous terrain to assist in pulling out survivors. Initial investigations suggest that the bus skidded before tumbling approximately 60 meters (200 feet) into the gorge. Some passengers were ejected from the vehicle upon impact and subsequently alerted authorities.

In a heartfelt message on social media platform X, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the families affected by this tragic event. His office announced that families of the deceased would receive financial assistance of 200,000 rupees (about $2,380), while those injured would be compensated with 50,000 rupees (approximately $595).

Road safety remains a critical concern in this mountainous region of India, where such incidents are not uncommon due to factors like aging vehicles, poor road maintenance, and reckless driving. Each year, road accidents claim hundreds of thousands of lives across India. Recent accidents include a July incident in Uttar Pradesh where 18 people died after a bus collided with a truck, and another in May that resulted in at least 21 fatalities when a bus carrying Hindu pilgrims skidded into a gorge.

As rescue operations continue and investigations are launched into this latest tragedy, the community mourns the loss of life and grapples with the pressing need for improved road safety measures in these perilous terrains.
