Togo removes visa requirement for all African nationals

The government of Togo has announced a new immigration policy granting visa-free entry to citizens of all African countries holding valid national passports.

According to an official statement issued by the Minister of Security, Calixte Batossie Madjoulba, the decision was approved by the President of the Council, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, and took effect on 18 May 2026. The measure allows African travelers to enter Togolese territory without a visa for stays of up to 30 days.

Authorities stated that this reform is part of a broader strategy to strengthen African integration, facilitate the movement of people and goods, and encourage closer cooperation among African states. It also aligns with the country’s ambition to position itself as a regional hub for business, culture, and services in West Africa.

However, officials clarified that the visa exemption does not remove security and health requirements. Travelers are still required to comply with immigration rules and must complete an online pre-registration at least 24 hours before arrival through the official government platform. Upon completion, a travel confirmation document must be presented at border checkpoints.

The government emphasized that this policy does not override national laws concerning illegal entry or residence and will continue to enforce border security regulations.
