Teenager critically injured in shark attack in Sydney Harbor
A teenage boy was left in critical condition after being attacked by a shark while swimming in Sydney Harbor on Sunday, according to authorities in New South Wales.
The incident occurred in the late afternoon near Shark Beach, in the eastern Sydney suburb of Vaucluse. The boy, believed to be around 13 years old, suffered severe injuries to his legs, consistent with a bite from a large shark.
Police officers were alerted within minutes and managed to pull the teenager out of the water. Emergency first aid was administered on board a police vessel, including the use of tourniquets to control bleeding, before the victim was rushed to Sydney Children’s Hospital. Medical staff later confirmed that his condition remained critical.
Following the attack, authorities advised the public to avoid swimming in nearby waters as a precaution.
Australia has recorded more than 1,280 shark-related incidents since the late 18th century, with over 250 resulting in fatalities. Experts note that increased human activity in coastal waters and rising ocean temperatures, which may influence shark migration patterns, could be contributing to the frequency of such encounters.
