Tata chooses Morocco as strategic hub to expand defense market in Africa
The Indian conglomerate Tata, through its subsidiary Tata Advanced Systems, is positioning Morocco as its primary hub for supplying military equipment across Africa, according to the Financial Times.
In September 2025, Tata established its first overseas defense manufacturing unit in Morocco, described as “the first private Indian company-operated defense facility abroad.” The plant is designed to produce around 150 armored platform vehicles for the Moroccan government, with deliveries already made in December 2025.
This Moroccan unit is part of a broader strategy to meet the growing demand for defense equipment on the continent. Tata views Morocco as “its first anchor point in Africa,” with plans to expand to additional African markets in the coming years. CEO Sukaran Singh emphasized that countries increasingly seek to diversify away from traditional suppliers, and having a domestic industrial base is a national priority.
The initiative aligns with India’s broader defense export strategy, which aims to reach $5 billion in annual overseas sales by 2029, with Africa identified as a priority region. Tata is among a select group of private Indian defense firms, including Larsen & Toubro and Bharat Forge, now expanding globally, supported by reforms encouraging private sector participation and international partnerships.
