Tangier Med strengthens maritime security with advanced U.S. X-ray cargo scanners

Tangier Med has enhanced its cargo inspection capabilities with the deployment of advanced U.S.-supplied X-ray scanners designed to reinforce maritime security and improve the screening of goods passing through one of the world's busiest commercial ports.

The announcement was made by U.S. Ambassador to Morocco Duke Buchan, who confirmed that the equipment had been donated by the United States to support cargo inspection operations at the Moroccan port.

Advanced technology to improve cargo inspections

Operated by trained personnel, the new scanners are designed to detect illegal weapons, dual-use components and high-risk shipments with greater accuracy and speed. The technology is expected to strengthen customs and security procedures while facilitating safer trade flows through the strategic Mediterranean gateway.

The deployment reflects the growing emphasis on combining efficient logistics with enhanced border security as global supply chains face increasingly complex security challenges.

Reinforcing a strategic trade hub

Tangier Med has become a key logistics platform linking Europe, Africa and the Americas. As cargo volumes continue to rise, advanced screening technologies play an increasingly important role in protecting commercial infrastructure while maintaining the smooth movement of legitimate trade.

The addition of high-performance X-ray systems is expected to further support the port's ability to identify potentially dangerous or prohibited cargo without disrupting operational efficiency.

According to Ambassador Buchan, the initiative demonstrates the shared commitment of Morocco and the United States to strengthening maritime security, securing international trade routes and expanding bilateral strategic cooperation.

The project underscores the long-standing partnership between Rabat and Washington in areas including security, trade and technological cooperation, while contributing to efforts aimed at safeguarding critical maritime infrastructure and global commerce.
