Syrian presidency announces immediate ceasefire in Sweida

The Syrian Presidency announced on Saturday an immediate and total ceasefire in the southern province of Sweida, urging all parties involved in the recent clashes to comply with the decision.

In an official statement released through the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the presidency said:
“Given the sensitive situation the country is facing, and out of concern for the unity of Syrian territory and the safety of its people, and in response to our national and humanitarian responsibility, a complete and immediate ceasefire is declared.”

The statement emphasized the need for all actors to allow Syrian state institutions and security forces to implement this ceasefire responsibly, with the goal of restoring stability and ending bloodshed.

The presidency also urged full compliance with the ceasefire across all regions, an immediate halt to hostilities, and unimpeded access for humanitarian aid. It called for the protection of civilians, stressing that peace efforts must be prioritized to avoid further escalation.

In recent days, Sweida has witnessed violent clashes that resulted in dozens of casualties and a mass displacement of civilians, raising concerns both domestically and internationally about the growing instability in the area.

Meanwhile, Syrian state television reported on Sunday a suicide bombing targeting a church in Damascus. Journalists from Agence France-Presse (AFP) at the scene confirmed that emergency services were evacuating victims, though further details have yet to be released.

The developments highlight the urgency of the ceasefire and the broader need for peaceful political solutions amid the ongoing crisis.
