Syria: 155,000 displaced after offensive against Kurdish areas in Aleppo
Clashes between Syrian government forces and Kurdish fighters in the city of Aleppo have forced around 155,000 people to flee their homes since earlier this week, according to local authorities. The fighting has mainly affected the predominantly Kurdish neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Achrafieh in northern Aleppo.
Displaced residents have sought refuge in other parts of the city or elsewhere in the province, as violence intensified following a military offensive launched by government forces. Officials report that the clashes have resulted in the deaths of at least 21 civilians since Tuesday.
The Syrian army announced on Saturday that it had concluded its military operation in Sheikh Maqsoud and halted combat activities in the area. However, Kurdish forces rejected these claims, stating that fighting was still ongoing and describing the government’s statements as unfounded. Journalists on the ground reported continued gunfire and observed security forces evacuating civilians trapped in their homes.
The violence marks the most serious escalation in Aleppo since the fall of former president Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. The confrontations come amid difficulties in implementing a political agreement reached in March, which aimed to integrate Kurdish self-administration institutions and the Syrian Democratic Forces into the new state structure.
Humanitarian corridors were opened to allow civilians to leave the affected districts, with families seen fleeing under difficult weather conditions. International actors, including the United States, have called for a peaceful withdrawal of Kurdish forces from Aleppo and stressed the need to ensure civilian safety amid the ongoing instability.
