Swiss voters appear set to reject population cap proposal

Swiss voters appeared likely to reject a proposal aimed at limiting the country's population growth, according to preliminary results released on Sunday following a nationwide referendum.

With vote counting still underway, approximately 52.9% of voters opposed the initiative, while 47.1% supported it. Voter turnout reached nearly 58%, reflecting strong public interest in the issue.

The proposal, known as “No to Ten Million Switzerland,” was backed by the right-wing Swiss People's Party and sought to cap Switzerland’s permanent resident population at 10 million people until 2050. Supporters argued that rapid population growth has placed increasing pressure on housing, transportation infrastructure, healthcare, and other public services.

However, the Swiss government and parliament recommended rejecting the measure, emphasizing the importance of immigration in addressing labor shortages and supporting economic growth. Officials also warned that implementing the proposal could jeopardize agreements governing the free movement of people between Switzerland and the European Union, potentially affecting broader bilateral relations.

Preliminary regional results indicated particularly strong opposition in French-speaking parts of the country, including the cantons of Geneva, Vaud, Neuchâtel, and Jura, where rejection rates exceeded 60%.

Switzerland’s population currently stands at around 9.1 million people. The referendum reflects ongoing debates across Europe over immigration, demographic change, and the balance between economic needs and population management.
