Sweden: Syrian suspect wanted for the murder of man who burned a Quran
Swedish prosecutors have issued an arrest warrant on Thursday, October 16, for a young Syrian suspected of killing Salwan Momika, an Iraqi Christian who had repeatedly burned copies of the Quran in 2023, sparking outrage across the Muslim world. The suspect remains at large, according to authorities.
Salwan Momika was shot dead on January 29 in an apartment in Södertälje, south of Stockholm, and later died in hospital.
“We have a clear picture of the sequence of events,” said chief prosecutor Rasmus Öman in an official statement. “Following thorough technical investigations and a review of collected surveillance footage, we have requested the suspect’s pre-trial detention in absentia.”
“At the moment, we do not know where the suspect is,” he added. A court hearing is scheduled for Friday.
