Suicide attack kills police officer in Aleppo
A suicide attacker killed one police officer and wounded two others during a security operation in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo, according to an announcement by the Interior Ministry on Wednesday.
Officials said the incident occurred at a security checkpoint in the Bab al-Faraj district, where police officers were carrying out routine inspections. The attacker reportedly detonated an explosive device while being searched by security personnel.
Local authorities stated that security forces were deployed across the city to ensure public safety during New Year celebrations when the suspect attempted to breach a checkpoint. During the intervention, one officer managed to restrain the individual before the explosion occurred.
The Interior Ministry indicated that the attacker may have had ideological or organizational links to the Islamic State group, which has stepped up attacks in areas under the control of the Syrian government in recent months.
The incident comes amid heightened security tensions in Syria, where militant activity continues despite years of military operations aimed at weakening extremist groups.
