Sudan: At least thirteen killed in attack on mosque in El-Fasher

At least 13 civilians were killed in an attack attributed to paramilitary forces on a mosque in El-Fasher, a besieged city in Darfur, western Sudan, witnesses said on Thursday, October 9.

El-Fasher remains the last major city in Darfur not fully under the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which have been fighting the regular army since April 2023.

A witness said, “After an artillery attack on Wednesday afternoon on the mosque in the Abou Chouk neighborhood, we recovered 13 bodies from the rubble and buried them.” A survivor reported 20 injuries. Many families had taken refuge in the mosque after RSF forces invaded their homes.

In the past 24 hours, at least 33 people were killed in paramilitary attacks in El-Fasher. Recent assaults also targeted a maternity ward with drone strikes, killing eight and injuring seven, while another attack killed at least 12, including medical staff.

Since August, RSF attacks have intensified, taking control of several parts of the city and leaving the remaining army positions under siege. Over one million people have fled the city since the conflict began, reducing the population from over one million to approximately 413,000. The UN calls the situation the “world’s worst humanitarian crisis.”
