Subaru recalls more than 541,000 vehicles in the US over certification label error

Subaru has announced a large-scale recall affecting more than half a million vehicles across the United States after regulators identified an error on a mandatory vehicle certification label.

The recall covers 541,237 vehicles that were produced with an incorrect Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) displayed on the certification label, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Labeling issue prompts regulatory action

The defect relates to inaccurate information printed on the certification label rather than to a mechanical or structural failure affecting vehicle performance.

The GAWR indicates the maximum weight that each axle is designed to support and forms part of the safety and compliance information required on every vehicle sold in the United States.

Because the labels contain incorrect specifications, Subaru is required to correct the issue to ensure compliance with federal safety regulations.

No mechanical defect reported

Authorities have not indicated that the labeling error poses an immediate driving risk or that it has been linked to crashes, injuries or vehicle malfunctions.

Instead, the recall is intended to ensure owners receive accurate vehicle information and that the affected models fully comply with U.S. regulatory requirements.

Owners to receive corrective measures

Subaru is expected to notify affected vehicle owners and provide instructions on how the incorrect certification labels will be replaced or corrected.
