Strengthening ties: Spain and Morocco’s evolving relationship

The bilateral relationship between Morocco and Spain is undergoing a significant transformation, marked by a robust diplomatic partnership that has emerged after a period of tension over Western Sahara-related issues. In a recent address to the Spanish Senate, Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares emphasized that the two nations are now experiencing the most solid diplomatic relationship in their shared history.

Albares highlighted the pivotal Joint Declaration of April 2022, resulting from discussions between King Mohammed VI of Morocco and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. This landmark agreement has ushered in an era of unprecedented cooperation, elevating their longstanding relationship into a strategic partnership.

Economic indicators illustrate the depth of this renewed connection. Bilateral trade has surged to approximately 25 billion euros, signifying a growing economic synergy. Over 15,000 Spanish companies regularly export to Morocco, with an additional 660 firms establishing a presence within Moroccan territories. This trend underscores the increasing attractiveness of Morocco’s business environment and its reliability as an economic partner.

Looking ahead, Albares noted the upcoming 2030 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Spain and Portugal, as a unique opportunity to further advance the friendship and strategic partnership between the two countries. He emphasized that this global tournament transcends sports, providing a platform for enhanced collaboration.

In addition to economic ties, migration management has emerged as a crucial area of cooperation. The Spanish Foreign Minister acknowledged Morocco’s essential role in managing irregular migration, stating that the situation would be “unmanageable” without Morocco’s support. This recognition highlights Morocco’s pivotal position in addressing one of Europe’s most complex contemporary challenges.

Albares’ remarks reflect a remarkable diplomatic renaissance, signaling a shift from past tensions to a model of regional cooperation between Morocco and Spain.
