Strengthening ties: India and Morocco forge a path of mutual growth
As India emerges as a pivotal player in global dynamics, its partnership with Morocco exemplifies a steadfast alliance rooted in pragmatism and mutual respect. This collaboration not only reflects shared interests but also a vision for a more interconnected and equitable world.
The relationship between India and Morocco transcends geographical boundaries, aligning in areas such as economic development, counter-terrorism, and renewable energy. It serves as a model of South-South cooperation, characterized by actionable strategies and aspirations.
A senior diplomat from the Indian embassy in Rabat highlighted this evolving bond during an exclusive interview with Morocco World News. The official emphasized the trust and shared ambitions that underpin this partnership, noting Morocco’s integral role in India’s international outlook. “India and Morocco share a time-tested and resilient partnership built on deep mutual respect, strategic convergence, and a shared quest for the well-being and prosperity of our citizens,” the diplomat stated.
This appreciation for Morocco extends beyond diplomatic formalities. It signifies a broader alignment of values, promoting development without exclusion and security through cooperation.
A historical framework
The current momentum of the India-Morocco relationship can be traced back to a significant meeting in 2015, when King Mohammed VI met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Third India-Africa Forum Summit in New Delhi. This encounter provided the political clarity necessary for deeper engagement, leading to the signing of over 40 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) across diverse sectors, including education and renewable energy.
Since then, more than 35 high-level visits have occurred, reinforcing a commitment to tangible progress. “Our cooperation reflects a real sense of purpose,” the diplomat affirmed. “India and Morocco are partners in South-South cooperation, especially in the context of Africa.”
India regards Morocco as a strategic gateway to the continent, valuing its local insights and navigation skills. Conversely, Morocco recognizes India’s scale and global influence, enhancing its own engagement in Africa.
Common ground for collaboration
The diplomat remarked on Morocco’s active participation in global initiatives like the Voice of Global South Summit, showcasing its moral and political influence on pressing global issues. “We see ample opportunity for collaboration in jointly addressing development challenges at multilateral forums, such as shaping global supply chains and promoting a peaceful, rules-based world,” he noted.
In January 2024, Moroccan Minister of Industry and Trade Ryad Mezzour highlighted the potential for deeper ties during the “Vibrant Gujarat” investors’ summit in Gandhinagar. He advocated for South-South and triangular cooperation as frameworks for enhancing industrialization and economic growth.
Trade figures from 2021 illustrate the robustness of this economic partnership, with India exporting approximately $931 million worth of goods to Morocco, including broadcasting equipment and automobiles. India's expanding role in global forums like the G20 and BRICS further provides Morocco with opportunities to assert its position as a significant interlocutor on the world stage.
A focus on security
Security is another foundational aspect of the India-Morocco relationship, with both nations viewing terrorism and radicalization as critical threats. Joint initiatives emphasize intelligence sharing, capacity building, and youth engagement, reflecting a comprehensive approach to security challenges.
Beyond the complexities of statecraft, the relationship is enriched by a sense of familiarity and shared understanding. As both countries navigate their futures, the confidence expressed by the Indian diplomat suggests a promising trajectory for this partnership.
