Strengthening morocco-qatar relations: a new era of cooperation

In a significant diplomatic move, Morocco's Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita met with Qatari Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad bin Sultan Al Muraikhi in Rabat on Thursday. The talks aimed to bolster the multifaceted partnership between the two nations, exploring avenues to enhance cooperation across various sectors in alignment with the directives of King Mohammed VI and Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

During this meeting, Bourita expressed Morocco's deep gratitude for Qatar's "constant and unwavering support" regarding the country’s territorial integrity. This sentiment was particularly directed towards Doha's backing of the Autonomy Plan, which Morocco considers "the sole basis for resolving the regional dispute over the Sahara" within its sovereign framework.

Both officials highlighted the recent momentum in their bilateral cooperation, marked by numerous ministerial exchanges and high-level visits that focus on priority sectors for both Morocco and Qatar. They also engaged in discussions about regional and international issues, reaffirming their shared stance on pressing Arab causes, notably the Palestinian issue.

In a display of solidarity, they reiterated their commitment to the "legitimate rights of the Palestinian people," advocating for the establishment of an independent state along the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international resolutions and the two-state solution.

This recent dialogue builds upon the strengthening of defense ties between Morocco and Qatar. Just days prior, the two nations signed a new defense cooperation agreement in Doha during talks between Lieutenant General Jassim bin Mohammed Al-Mannai, Qatar's chief of staff, and Lieutenant General Mohammed Berrid, inspector general of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces. The military partnership has seen significant advancements, including a recent legal advisors training program that took place in Rabat.

Established in 1972, relations between Morocco and Qatar continue to expand across multiple domains. The two countries share robust economic ties, with Qatar standing as one of Morocco’s largest foreign investors. In 2011, they launched a $2 billion joint venture fund, showcasing their commitment to mutual growth.

Cultural collaboration has flourished as well, with Morocco set to be Qatar's Years of Culture partner for 2024, featuring over 80 events throughout the year, including exhibitions, workshops, and cultural exchanges. This partnership was further solidified last December when King Mohammed VI and Sheikh Tamim held a phone conversation aimed at enhancing cooperation and addressing regional issues of mutual interest.

Through these dialogues and agreements, Morocco and Qatar are poised to embark on a new chapter of collaboration, reinforcing their ties and addressing shared challenges on both regional and international fronts.
