Stellantis Picks Kenitra for Electric C4 production
Stellantis has announced plans to manufacture the electric version of the Citroën C4 at its plant in Kenitra, Morocco. This move comes as part of a broader overhaul of the company’s industrial strategy aimed at cutting costs and improving production efficiency. Meanwhile, the combustion-engine version of the C4 will continue to be assembled at the Madrid plant in Spain.
Rather than adapting its STLA Small electric platform to accommodate internal combustion engines—a more expensive option—Stellantis opted to modify its existing CMP platform to support electric powertrains. This strategic shift enables the company to restructure production roles across its facilities.
With this decision, the Madrid plant maintains its role in the production network, while the Kenitra facility gains strategic prominence. The Moroccan site is set to become the new hub for the next-generation electric C4, underlining Morocco’s rising significance in Stellantis’s global manufacturing operations.
A company spokesperson described Morocco as a strong industrial base supporting Stellantis's European expansion. At the same time, incoming CEO Antonio Vilosa, expected to take office on June 23, affirmed that Spain remains a vital part of the company’s production system, noting the industrial maturity of the Vigo plant as a key indicator of its enduring importance.
