Starship breaks up mid-flight, flights diverted to avoid debris

SpaceX’s Starship spacecraft experienced a catastrophic failure mid-flight, forcing airlines to reroute flights to avoid falling debris.

While the company successfully recovered a first-stage booster on Thursday, the uncrewed Starship prototype was lost during its ascent. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) briefly restricted and rerouted air traffic in the region to ensure safety, according to a statement. A spokesperson confirmed, “Normal operations have resumed.”

Flight data indicates that at least 20 flights altered their routes to steer clear of potential debris, which eyewitness footage appeared to show reentering Earth’s atmosphere over the Caribbean.

SpaceX founder Elon Musk suggested that the mishap was likely caused by an oxygen or fuel leak in a compartment above the ship’s engine firewall. He added that future designs will include enhanced fire suppression and venting systems. Musk remains optimistic, stating that the next launch is still planned for the coming month.

Contact with the Starship vehicle was lost roughly eight and a half minutes after liftoff from its Texas launch site. The vehicle, on its maiden flight, was carrying 10 dummy satellites and aimed to complete a partial orbital trajectory.

SpaceX later stated, “Starship experienced a rapid unscheduled disassembly during its ascent burn.” The company emphasized that test flights like these provide valuable data to improve future performance and reliability.

This test marked the seventh flight for the Starship program, which Musk envisions as a cornerstone for future missions to Mars, transporting both humans and cargo.

In a parallel achievement, Blue Origin successfully launched its New Glenn rocket into orbit for the first time earlier that day, signaling progress in the competitive field of commercial space exploration.

Musk, known for his humor, later drew comparisons between his rivalry with Blue Origin’s Jeff Bezos and the comedic dynamic of characters in the movie Step Brothers.
