Starlink Wi-Fi coming to Royal Air Maroc aircraft from 2027
Royal Air Maroc is set to take a major step in the digital transformation of air travel by introducing Starlink high-speed internet on 41 aircraft, positioning the Moroccan flag carrier as the first airline in Africa to offer the satellite connectivity service across its fleet.
The rollout is scheduled to begin in early 2027 and will be implemented progressively. The approach is designed to allow the airline to integrate the technology while maintaining normal operations and ensuring consistent service quality as more aircraft are equipped.
A new standard for connectivity above Africa
Once activated, the Starlink system will give passengers access to high-speed, low-latency internet throughout their journey. The service is expected to support activities that have traditionally been difficult or unreliable on aircraft, including video streaming, real-time communications, remote work and other bandwidth-intensive online services.
For Royal Air Maroc, the initiative goes beyond adding another onboard amenity. Internet connectivity has become an increasingly important component of the passenger experience, particularly as travelers expect the same level of digital access in the air that they have on the ground.
Members of the airline's Safar Flyer loyalty programme will be able to use the service free of charge, giving the carrier's frequent travelers direct access to the new connectivity platform.
Part of a broader modernization strategy
The Starlink agreement forms part of a wider effort by Royal Air Maroc to modernize its customer experience. The airline is simultaneously pursuing a long-term transformation programme involving fleet renewal, cabin improvements and upgrades to its services both at airports and onboard its aircraft.
Hamid Addou, Royal Air Maroc's president and chief executive, said the partnership reflects the airline's objective of bringing its passenger experience closer to the highest international standards. He also linked the connectivity project to the carrier's broader ambition of strengthening its role as a bridge between Africa, Europe and other global destinations.
The move could be particularly significant for Royal Air Maroc's diverse customer base. Business travelers can use the connection to remain productive during flights, while students, tourists and members of the Moroccan and wider African diaspora can maintain communication with family, colleagues and institutions without waiting until landing.
Starlink targets a growing aviation market
For SpaceX's Starlink aviation business, the agreement provides an important foothold in the African market. Lauren Dreyer, vice president of commercial operations for Starlink at SpaceX, described Royal Air Maroc's decision as a significant development for aviation on the continent.
The satellite network is designed to provide high-speed connectivity with low latency, potentially reducing some of the limitations associated with conventional inflight internet systems. Royal Air Maroc passengers will therefore be able to remain connected on routes departing from Casablanca and linking Morocco with destinations across Africa and beyond.
Casablanca at the center of a digital aviation push
The deployment also reinforces the strategic importance of Casablanca as a major international aviation gateway. Through its hub, Royal Air Maroc connects Morocco with a wide network of African, European and international destinations.
Introducing satellite-based broadband across part of its fleet could give the airline a new competitive dimension at a time when digital services are becoming increasingly influential in passengers' choices and expectations.
The project is also significant at the continental level. By becoming the first African airline to introduce Starlink connectivity under the announced programme, Royal Air Maroc is seeking to establish a benchmark for the next generation of passenger services in African aviation.
As the first installations begin in 2027, the challenge will be to translate the technology into a consistent onboard experience across the equipped aircraft. If the deployment progresses as planned, high-speed internet could become an increasingly standard feature of Royal Air Maroc's strategy to modernize the passenger journey and strengthen its position in the rapidly evolving African aviation market.
