SRM Casablanca-Settat Advances Major Drinking Water Projects Across Rural Areas

The Casablanca-Settat region is stepping up efforts to improve access to drinking water in rural communities through a major infrastructure programme being implemented by the Société Régionale Multiservices (SRM) Casablanca-Settat in partnership with the regional authorities.

The initiative forms part of Morocco’s National Programme for Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation 2020-2027 (PNAEPI) and targets a number of centres and rural settlements across the region. With a total budget of 350.8 million dirhams, the programme is designed to extend water services, strengthen existing networks and reduce territorial inequalities.

The overall financing includes 245.6 million dirhams from the Ministry of the Interior and 105.2 million dirhams from the General Directorate of Local Authorities.

Projects across five provinces

The programme covers several provinces, including Settat, Berrechid, Benslimane, El Jadida and Sidi Bennour.

Its main components include the connection of 25 centres to drinking water networks, with an allocation of 150 million dirhams. A further 150.8 million dirhams is dedicated to improving water access for rural populations across 341 douars, while another 50 million dirhams will finance the development of water points in 80 douars.

The projects involve a range of infrastructure works, depending on local requirements, including new water networks, reinforcement of existing facilities, storage capacity, pumping systems and individual connections.

Beyond the construction work itself, the programme seeks to bring essential public services closer to rural households and address differences in access between urban and rural areas.

SRM takes the lead on projects in Sidi Bennour and El Jadida

Within this broader programme, SRM Casablanca-Settat is directly managing projects worth nearly 44 million dirhams including tax in the provinces of Sidi Bennour and El Jadida.

Its responsibilities extend throughout the project cycle, from technical studies and procurement procedures to contract management, construction supervision, quality control and final acceptance of completed facilities.

In Sidi Bennour, six centres are covered: Sebt Lamaarif, Ouled Amrane, M’Tal, Metrane, Ouled Si Bouhya and Bni Hilal. The projects have a combined value of approximately 35 million dirhams including tax.

The works include the construction and reinforcement of drinking-water networks, elevated water tanks and associated equipment, booster stations and individual household connections. Overall progress has reached around 90%, putting the projects close to completion.

El Jadida project completed

In the province of El Jadida, an investment of approximately 8.6 million dirhams including tax has been dedicated to supplying drinking water to the centre of Sidi Hssein Ben Abderrahmane and six douars within the Ouled Hcine commune.

The infrastructure includes around 19 kilometres of pipelines, nine public water points, a 150-cubic-metre elevated reservoir and reinforcement of the pumping station.

The completed project is expected to benefit approximately 1,200 households, representing nearly 6,000 residents.

A broader operational role

The projects illustrate the expanding operational role of SRM Casablanca-Settat in the delivery of regional water infrastructure. Its responsibilities can cover the preparation or updating of technical studies, the launch of tenders, contract awards, construction monitoring and inspection, acceptance of completed facilities, as well as administrative and financial follow-up.

By combining infrastructure investment with direct project management, the programme aims to strengthen the reliability of drinking-water services in rural communities while extending access to areas that remain less well served by existing networks.
