SRM Casablanca-Settat accelerates water security strategy with desalination expansion
The Regional Multiservices Company (SRM) Casablanca-Settat is stepping up its efforts to strengthen water security across Morocco's most populous region by expanding non-conventional water resources and improving the efficiency of its drinking water distribution network.
Speaking during the 2nd International Symposium on Integrated Water Governance, the utility outlined a series of initiatives designed to address growing pressure on water supplies while enhancing the resilience of regional infrastructure.
Greater reliance on alternative water sources
SRM Casablanca-Settat currently distributes approximately 348 million cubic metres of drinking water each year. While conventional water sources continue to account for the majority of supply, the company is steadily increasing the contribution of alternative resources.
At present, around 80% of distributed water originates from conventional sources, with the remaining 20% supplied through desalination, reflecting Morocco's broader strategy to diversify its water portfolio amid recurring drought conditions.
Investment in desalination infrastructure
A key component of the company's strategy is the expansion of desalination and demineralisation facilities.
Of the 27 treatment stations planned under the programme, 21 are already operational, marking significant progress toward strengthening regional production capacity.
Backed by an investment of MAD 400 million, the initiative is expected to increase annual drinking water production from 2.8 million cubic metres to 8 million cubic metres, substantially improving the availability of potable water for households and businesses.
Improving network efficiency
Alongside infrastructure expansion, SRM Casablanca-Settat is continuing efforts to reduce water losses across its distribution network.
Enhancing network performance is considered a critical element of the company's long-term water management strategy, helping preserve existing resources while ensuring a more reliable supply for consumers.
The combination of improved operational efficiency and expanded desalination capacity forms part of Morocco's broader approach to strengthening water resilience in the face of climate change, rising demand and increasing pressure on conventional water resources.
